KEN SMITH WORKSHOP
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE URBANISM ART
 PS 19, Queens, NY
Start Date: 2002 Completion Date: 2003 The Robin Hood Foundation, Client The New York City Department of Education, Client Pentagram, Graphic Designer above image - Albert Vecerka / ESTO below image 1 - Paul Warchol below image 2 - Albert Vecerka / ESTO The project was conceived as a set of five prototypes, each addressing a typical schoolyard problem: the forbidding schoolyard fence, ubiquitous asphalt paving, lack of furnishings, lack of green space and lack of space for kids and classes to gather outdoors for reading and learning. The project is filled with common materials used in new ways, such as a long “cloud scrim” panorama printed on easily replaceable industrial fabric, which raises the eye to an always-blue horizon that’s visible from both the street and inside the garden. In the first phase bright round graphics were painted on the standardized steel temporary classrooms.
